Product Description

***This class will begin on August 9, 2021***

This 3.0 CEU foundation course satisfies the RID CEU PPO requirement. The course examines the phenomena of power, privilege, and oppression and their effects on individuals, families, and communities in the context of the values of social and economic justice and the sign language interpreter profession. This five-week course is intended to increase awareness of the intersectionality of multiple oppressions focusing on ability, race/ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, and sexual orientation. Using a format of weekly video lectures, presented by a diverse group of presenters, participants will engage with one another in response to discussion questions. Using Bobby Harro’s Cycles of Socialization and Liberation, “Why am I like this?” will help participants gain self-awareness while identifying the sources of influence of personal biases and values that impact practice with diverse groups. Also discussed is how these biases show up in healthcare systems, social service agencies, learning institutions, and sign language interpreting. Presented are strategies to bring about personal and social change, moving forward toward empowerment or liberation.
On Monday of each week, participants are presented with a video lecture on a specific topic and are then required to respond to discussion questions and at least two other participants.  All responses to discussion questions for the week are due the following Sunday at 11:55 pm. Participants progress at their own pace within the week.
